The History of PMC

Poseidon Marine Consultants Ltd. (PMC) was co-founded in 1987 by Bill Maybee and Arthur Peterson.

Previously a manager in a St. John’s-based design office, Bill was already an established naval architect and hull surveyor. Arthur had spent several years as a marine engineer and superintendent. Craig Simmons joined the company in 1988, as a recent graduate of the Naval Architecture program at the Marine Institute in St. John’s.

In the years following, the company completed many innovative vessel designs for the fishery, as well as other technical consulting projects for the local marine and offshore industries.

The resilience of the company was tested in 1992, when the moratorium on the cod fishery was announced. The inevitable economic downturn that followed had an immediate impact on business, before rebounding the following year. The company began to grow once again, and in 1998 moved into its newly constructed office building on Stavanger Drive.

Between 2000 and 2015, a new generation of core employees emerged. Drawing upon the experiences of Bill and Craig, this group contributed to company best practices, leveraged the capabilities of new design software, and established their own working relationships with clients and industry personnel. Additional markets were successfully pursued, elevating the company to a new level of capability and performance.

In 2015, a formal restructuring of the company was finalized. Professional technologists Deon Dyke, Aaron Mercer, and John Slade became shareholders, together with Tim Wetzel, P. Eng., who was appointed to the position of President. In 2020, the ownership base was expanded to include Stephen Mulrooney, P. Eng.

In response to growing business throughout Atlantic Canada, a second full time office was formally established in the fall of 2017, and is located in the greater Saint John area of the province of New Brunswick.
